about

My first live album, which was also almost entirely improvised (the result of a brief flurry of public performances). The titles were mostly attached after the fact, usually reflecting the mood of the piece. Opening Improvisation opened the November show, and Closing Improvisation closed the February show (but not the album). Circular Improvisation took its inspiration from a Digitch multieffect autopanning patch called Round And Round. New Worlds I was the first of a series of compositions inspired by World Music (drum programming on a Roland drum machine).

Relentless Improvisation struck me that way when I listened to the recording. Funk Improvisation is based on a Roland funk drum pattern, with looped guitar and bass (compliments of pitch shifting). I remember syncing the looper to the drum machine with MIDI for this, something I rarely did. At the November show I was alternating sets with an adventurous DJ. He asked me to sit in on his last set, so what you hear was completely spontaneous, with zero advance preparation. I never did get his name. If you're out there, please get in touch so I can credit you properly!

Recorded live to minidisc at Café Bisous, Charlotte, NC on November 17, 2000 (Tracks 1–3, 6– 7) and February 15, 2001 (Tracks 4–5). Released on CD in 2002.

about

Mark Sullivan Charlotte, North Carolina

I play jazz and experimental music. Since coming to the Charlotte area in 1986 I've played in the free jazz/anything goes ensemble Cornerstone, the art rock band Ras Majuka, led my jazz trio the Mark Sullivan Trio, and given solo ambient loop performances. I studied composition with avant-gardist George Cacioppo (of the ONCE group).Full bio at ultravillage.com/mark-sullivan ... more
