about

A collection of home recordings made between 1995 and 2001 (originally on cassette, if memory serves). Released on CD in 2002.

November was first conceived in that month, but I didn't get around to recording it until January: it's much more abstract and percussive than usual for me at the time. Super Bowl Shuffle was recorded on the day of Super Bowl XXXIII. Footprints is a mostly abstract version of the Wayne Shorter classic. Sound On Sound takes its name from the Digitech multieffect patch used. New Worlds II was part of a series of World Music compositions; drums programmed on my Roland Rhythm Composer TR-707.

Street Scenes II revisits my series of compositions based on street recordings. The source is from the Diag at the University of Michigan, featuring a street preacher and hecklers. I processed the source tape with echo in some parts. Amazing Grace revisits the traditional tune I played live on my first album Electronic Meditations. Longer Than Before is built on very long drones. The final Reprise is an earlier study for the instrumental parts in Street Scenes II: hence, Scenes, No Street.

about

Mark Sullivan Charlotte, North Carolina

I play jazz and experimental music. Since coming to the Charlotte area in 1986 I've played in the free jazz/anything goes ensemble Cornerstone, the art rock band Ras Majuka, led my jazz trio the Mark Sullivan Trio, and given solo ambient loop performances. I studied composition with avant-gardist George Cacioppo (of the ONCE group).Full bio at ultravillage.com/mark-sullivan ... more
